Why Is Dementia a Global Problem?

Dementia is a condition characterized by a decline in thinking skills, memory, and ability to perform everyday activities. The World Health Organization predicts that the population of people with dementia, which currently stands at 55 million, will grow to 139 million by 2050, becoming 2.5 times greater in just 30 years. More shockingly, the Alzheimer’s Association reports that 1 in 3 people over the age of 85 will develop dementia. Thus, this issue demands immediate attention to cease the growing dementia population.

Solution

How Is Go For A Better World Tackling This Problem?

Go For A Better World has developed an innovative approach to tackle the global issue of dementia by creating a comprehensive dementia prevention program that considers cognitive function, social interaction, and emotional well-being using the traditional Chinese strategic game Go as a primary tool. Research has shown that playing Go can promote cognitive function in people with dementia as it activates both the right and left sides of the brain, as well as brain areas associated with attention, problem-solving, and memorization. Studies also show that Go-game intervention can significantly alleviate depression and anxiety among Alzheimer’s patients.

Moreover, Go is a game enjoyed by people of all ages, and it has a strong social component. For this reason, seniors are given countless opportunities to bond with different people while enjoying the game of Go.

We, Go For A Better World, aim to deliver Go-based programs to senior centers and assisted living communities, starting with the San Diego community. We work with volunteers from various age groups, including members of the San Diego Go Club to teach Go to senior citizens. Go For A Better World envisions a future where seniors and volunteers can learn and support each other, forming lasting bonds across generations through the game of Go, without worrying about dementia.
